Did you ever walk down the sidewalk with a four year old? And your four year old keeps wandering toward the curb and maybe even toward the road and you keep pulling your kid over to the other side of you? "This side of a grown up. I don't want you walking near the curb! This side of a grown up! Hold my hand." You say it over and over again every time your kid starts to wander over to the curb, and you push your kid back over to the other side and you hold their hand and you say, "Always have a grown up between you and the road, back over here, hold my hand."
Why -- why do you nag your kid every time the kid starts to wander toward the road? Why do you do that? You keep telling him over and over again, "I'm going to hold your hand." The reason is because you really care. As soon as that little problem starts to creep up, you can see there is a potential for a big problem. So you keep pushing your kid over to the other side. And why? Because you really, really care.
But see, if you dealt with that situation the way most managers deal with employee problems, the kid starts to wander toward the curb and you just let him go and SPLAT -- "You've got to learn sometime!" That's how most managers deal with employee performance problems.
