Leadership and management might sound the same but they are not. There is a difference between a leader and a manager; simply like that, a leader is the person who is able to lead and has qualifications of leadership, and the manager is able to manage and has the qualifications of management, so not necessarily a leader is a manager and vise versa.
The most gifted athletes rarely make good coaches. The best violinist will not necessarily make the best conductor. Nor will the best teacher necessarily make the best head of the department. So it's critical to distinguish between the skill of performance and the skill of leading the performance, two entirely different skills. It's also important to determine whether a person is capable of learning leadership. The natural leader will stand out. The trick is identifying those who are capable of learning leadership over time.
A leader can be described as a person at the head of a group of followers. To achieve and maintain such a position, there are certain leadership qualities that a person generally needs. These include honesty, integrity, and receptiveness. Leadership mainly requires a person with “strong and integrated” personality in order to lead and affect the others to follow. Management mainly requires a person with “knowledge and control” about his position and its responsibilities.
However both titles do have their own roles and responsibilities, and they share some, but as I mentioned they are two different responsibilities or roles.
Leadership responsibilities could be classified as the following characters:
  • Views problems as opportunities
  • Priority setting
  • Customer focused
  • Courageous
  • Critical and creative thinker
  • Tolerance for ambiguity
  • Positive attitude towards change
  • Committed to innovations.

  • Debate, clarify and enunciate values and beliefs
  • Fuel, inspire and guard the shared vision
  • Communicate the strategic plan at all levels
  • Recognize the problems inherent to the planning process
  • Asks big picture questions and "what if"
  • Encourage dreaming and thinking the unthinkable
  • Align the budget, planning, policies and instructional programs with the organization goals and vision
  • Engage in goal setting
  • Develop and implement action plans
  • Practice and plan conscious abandonment
  • Transfer the strategic planning process to planning
  • Focus on the end goal/bottom line/results
  • Valuing of others
  • Keeps promises and honor commitments
  • Willingness to delegate
Leadership qualities:
However there are some qualities that can enhance leaders, but without which they can still be effective. Strong character is one the leadership qualities that is essential to all leaders. Character is a wide range of traits that collectively identifies a person. This includes values, morals, and methods. In order for a person to be a good leader, he must generally have a clear and distinct identity, and he must be aware of it.Character usually needs to be accented with integrity. This is a quality that allows outsiders, including followers, to know what to expect from a person. This does not necessarily mean that a leader is wholly predictable. Rather, it means that his words, actions, and decisions will be bound to certain standards that are defined by his character.
Receptiveness is one of the leadership qualities that can allow a leader to grow. Being at the head of a group does not make a person all-knowing. This is why most great leaders are surrounded by great advisers. A leader typically needs to be able to listen. He also needs to be able to observe what is going on around him. With receptiveness comes decisiveness. A leader needs to take in information, but ultimately many final decisions will be his own. When the time comes for decisions to be made, he must be able to do so. The decisions that he makes should be based on solid characteristics and not on unleashed emotions. Certain leadership qualities can be difficult to uphold at all times, but it is important that a leader strives to do so. One example is honesty. Many of the things that a leader encounters may not be easy to share with his followers, but still, he should not deceive them. Doing so not only could result in a setback to a cause or organization, but it could also damage the level of respect that people have for the leader.
Another of the leadership qualities that may be difficult to uphold at all times is the need to display humility. Leaders should have causes and objectives. This means that at all times they are aware that they are not in a position to serve and cater to themselves. A good leader must be able to put others first and to prioritize the needs and concerns of others above his own. He must also be able to admit faults and difficulties.
Hence we can conclude that leadership is mainly the personality integration, reflection, and impression.
Integration by having “all features and characters in one person”; Reflection to let the others see what to do and how to do it, and impression to let them follow you because you are the guide and the leader.
It is like many responsibilities in one, many persons in one, because it is leading the others, so they are following the same steps of that leader, and they are oriented by his/her instructions.
Being a leader not an easy responsibility; you are making the others do what you want, and you are responsible for what they do!
